Born and raised in Peterborough Ontario, Sandy grew up struggling with the challenges and stigma of learning disabilities. Along with ADHD and a side dish of others, reading and writing were the most disrupted by his brains inabilities to process standard forms of learning. Becoming a writer seemed impossible, but passion and perseverance can overcome any obstacle. It has been a very long and winding road, but Sandy’s insatiable desire for story telling, slowly built on the rubble of former “can'ts”, has taken him from alienated and awkward to awards.
“Over 25 years ago I discovered the classic Canadian, one act play, CREEPS. It changed the way I saw the world. It changed my concept of what I was capable of. The disabled characters in this powerhouse play, written by David E. Freeman, made people uncomfortable, made them question their own prejudices. I loved the danger in their words. In their stories. In their pursuit of happiness and meaning. This is the authenticity that continues to drive me.”

Besides kindness, perseverance and consistency, he believes in telling truths. That “based on a true story” or “high concept fiction” must both be rooted in the same thing—Heart—that mesmerizing dance of our emotional selves. He believes in the impact of words, that great stories can entertain as well as influence our experience on this earth and with each other. That profitable doesn’t mean “sell out”, it means that more people have spent time in the world you have lovingly made. Sandy writes/creates worlds around people, not the other way around. Stories that put us in their shoes and let us take a moment out of our own realities, to run away in theirs.
